We believe it essential to practice comprehensive medicine, which is based on the model of biopsychosocial-existential medicine, in the treatment of pain, especially chronic pain. We do our daily treatment always aiming at practicing this comprehensive medicine.
Introduction of the concept of salutogenesis into the treatment of pain just indicates a paradigm shift. In particular, integration of pathogenesis (search of pathogenesis) and salutogenesis (health promotion theory) in the treatment of chronic pain is the new paradigm, whose accomplishment is possible only in the context of comprehensive medicine.
Salutogenesis is a new concept advocated by Aaron Antonovsky (1923-1994), a health sociologist of Israel, represents the concept of restoring patients' Salutogenesis is a new concept advocated by Aaron Antonovsky (1923-1994), a health sociologist of Israel, represents the concept of restoring patients' health by seeking various latent capacities for essential stress tolerance (resources) they have, which is different from pathogenesis, and utilizing such capacities efficiently. In concrete, this concept corresponds to the concepts of traditional Oriental medicine, the complementary and alternative medicine, and moreover the psychosomatic medicine.
As is the case for chronic pain, for the pathology for which mere medical treatment based on the conventional pathogenesis has its limitation in efficacy, salutogenesis is expected to provide us with a new approach to patients, which differs from pathogenesis.
Finally, we should never forget that pathogenesis and salutogenesis do not represent two opposite concepts but they are in a mutually complementary and mutually respecting relation in the context of comprehensive medicine.
